What is the Respondus LockDown Browser?

Answer

The Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom web browser that increases the security of online testing in Moodle. When students use the LockDown Browser to access a quiz, they are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, access other applications, or close a quiz until it is submitted for grading.

Quizzes created for use with the Respondus LockDown Browser cannot be accessed with standard browsers like Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge.

To begin using Respondus, instructors must first add the Respondus LockDown Browser block to a course.

1. Click the Turn editing on button at the top right-hand side of your course page

2. On the bottom left-hand side of the page click the Add a Block scroll down menu and select Respondus LockDown Browser

3. After the Respondus block displays, click the Dashboard ... link to begin configuring an existing quiz to use the Respondus LockDown Browser

For more detailed directions on how to use the Respondus Browser, visit the Respondus website at https://web.respondus.com/he/lockdownbrowser/resources/. This page includes videos, guides, sample syllabus wording, and additional training for instructors. These resources can also be accessed from within the LockDown Browser Dashboard Welcome screen in Moodle.

Respondus hosted an instructor training session for Whittier College. You can view the recorded session from the Whittier College Faculty Development site at https://facultydevelopment.whittier.domains/tutorials/.
