How do I backup and restore an existing class to reflect a new semester?

Answer

Backup

Find the Administration box on the left side of the course and click Backup

***You will go through a series of five steps***

1. Uncheck Include enrolled users

  • 1a. Make sure Include calendar events IS checked and then click Next

2. Click None under Select (you don’t want old user data for the restore)

  • 2a. There may be a box at the bottom of the screen for Quickmail history… unclick if it’s there and then click Next

3. The next screen (Confirmation and review) gives you visual assurance that you’ve checked what you meant to (double check that Include calendar events has a green checkmark)

4. Should you need to change something you can hit the Previous button otherwise click Perform backup

5. A message will appear giving you confirmation when the backup is Complete, click Continue

Restore

In the next screen scroll down to find User private backup area click on the link that reads Restore

***You will go through a series of seven steps***

1. The first screen is the Confirm screen, it verifies you chose the right backup to restore and gives you a visual of the information that is and is NOT included

  • 1a. Click Continue

2. The second screen is the Destination screen, scroll down to Restore into an existing course

(at this point you need to find the new course… If it is not listed in the Select a course list… open another tab and browse to the course you’ll import to.  Click Edit settings and copy the name - either short or long name - then go back to the tab where the restore is happening and paste the name you just copied into the search field at the bottom of the Restore to existing course box)

  • 2a. You should now see one (and only one) course in the Select course area. It is VERY IMPORTANT…Click the radial button for that course and then Search
  • 2b. Click Continue

3. The third screen is the Settings screen, you’ll get a confirmation of your Restore settings

  • 3a. Click Next

4. The fourth screen is Schema. This screen is where you’ll CHANGE THE DATE (usually the  MONDAY of the first week). Click Yes for Overwrite course configuration. UNCHECK Course name and Course short name. Keep the Course start date checkmark and the date to the first Monday of the week the course started

  • 4a. Scroll down and click Next

5. The fifth screen is Review. Another visual confirmation of what you are restoring will prompt (You’ll see the old class name, but with a new course start date)

  • 5a. Scroll down and click Perform restore

6. The sixth screen is Process. You’ll get a visual of the progress of your restore (can be quick depending on size of data).

***When finished you’ll be prompted into…***

7. The seventh screen is Complete

  • 7a. Click Continue

*Here is short video explaining this process.
